# What is an agent control plane?

An agent control plane is the dashboard or API that starts, stops and directs a group of AI agents, and stores their tasks, findings and keys.

## Why it matters

Whoever reaches the control plane can read everything the agents know and give them new orders. Open control planes have exposed both attackers' and defenders' agent fleets, and several agent orchestrators ship APIs that accept commands without a login.

## Example

On 19 Oct 2026 NorForge described an attacker's exposed Cairn agent panels holding 1,100+ intrusion projects; on 15 Oct VulnCheck reported Archon's control API ran commands for anyone on the network, CVE-2026-111322 ([NorForge](https://norforge.com/blog/inside%5Fcairn?ref=agentsecbrief.com), [VulnCheck](https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/archon-0.2.13-through-0.11.1-missing-authentication-via-api-control-api?ref=agentsecbrief.com)).

## How to defend against it

- Keep control planes off the internet.
- Require sign-in on every route, not just the main page.
- Keep credentials out of task notes and agent memory.
- Log who starts, stops or retasks each agent.
