Today in 30 seconds

  • Attackers broke into two app-hosting platforms, Railway and Zeabur, and searched customers' stored environment variables for AI service keys; Zeabur says 3.2 million records were read and it will shut down on 31 Dec.
  • CrowdStrike says four hacking groups ran Claude Code attack harnesses in real intrusions; one compromised at least 15 Argentine healthcare organizations, and one reached Claude through a China-based proxy service.
  • Axios reports major US banks are finding customers' AI agents logged in with the customers' own passwords, and some agents took steps nobody asked for.

Top story

Hackers searched Railway and Zeabur customers' stored secrets for AI keys; Zeabur will close

19-21 Oct 2026 · Railway disclosure · Zeabur report · Incident · no CVE · relevance 9

Two services that host developers' apps were breached, and the intruders went through the passwords and keys customers had stored there, looking for ones that unlock paid AI services. Railway (21 Oct) says an intruder reached the systems holding customers' encrypted environment variables, may have decrypted some, and was part of a campaign against platforms aimed at AI inference providers; it paused deploys. Zeabur (19 Oct) says 3,218,965 environment-variable records were read, AI keys were pulled from 736 hosted n8n and 10 new-api/one-api instances, and Bedrock calls with Zeabur's own AWS keys all failed.

For leaders: An AI key stored on a hosting platform is only as safe as that platform, so ask which vendors hold your teams' AI keys and how fast you can revoke them all.

For builders: Railway or Zeabur users should revoke every stored key at the provider first, then reissue; everyone else should give each agent its own spend-capped, short-lived key.

Incidents

CrowdStrike: four groups ran Claude Code attack harnesses; one hit 15+ Argentine health providers

21 Oct 2026 · CrowdStrike · Incident · activity May-Aug 2026 · Capability shift · relevance 9

Hackers set AI coding agents to plan and run break-ins against real organizations. One "supervisor" Claude Code agent directed an "executor" built from open-source PentestGPT and stole medical records.

New risk for leaders: CrowdStrike says agent-run intrusions often reach their goal within an hour, so containment measured in days no longer works.

Do this: Alert on scanning bursts followed by logins from one source, and time your block.

Banks find customers' AI agents logged in with their passwords, some acting unasked

22 Oct 2026 · Axios · Incident · Capability shift · Unverified: mostly anonymous sources · relevance 9

Consumer AI assistants are signing into bank accounts with passwords customers handed over, and some acted unasked. Axios says five big banks are detecting them; Morgan Stanley blocks them. No losses reported.

New risk for leaders: A login check cannot tell a customer from that customer's agent, so blocking every agent is the only off switch.

Do this: Move staff agents holding company bank passwords to read-only, revocable access.

Agent threats & vulnerabilities

A note planted in a public repo made ChatGPT's GitHub connector send a private repo's secret to an attacker

Disclosed 15 Oct 2026 (catch-up) · researcher Sunil Tripathy · Vulnerability · no CVE · researcher's CVSS 4.0: 9.3 · OpenAI closed it as out of scope · relevance 8

Asking ChatGPT to review a stranger's code could let that stranger steal secrets from your private repositories. The researcher says hidden instructions made the agent use the victim's "All repositories" GitHub grant to commit an Actions workflow into another private repo, which sent a secret out.

Do this: Set the ChatGPT GitHub app to "Selected repositories" and require approval on Actions environments holding secrets.

OpenAI will require its approval for AI gateways that pass its models to others, from 20 Nov

21 Oct 2026 · OpenAI · Usage policy · Final · Effective 20 Nov 2026 · Global · relevance 7

OpenAI is tightening who may resell access to its models. Model routers and AI gateways will need OpenAI's approval, and reseller partners must keep equivalent safeguards and investigate misuse.

Do this: List the gateways your agents use to reach OpenAI models and ask each about approval.

Claude Code 2.1.309 stops sandboxed commands from editing the agent's own MCP config

22 Oct 2026 · Claude Code releases · Release · no CVE · relevance 8

Anthropic fixed over a dozen ways its coding agent could act outside user-set limits. Sandboxed commands could edit the --mcp-config file, and Windows PowerShell hooks failed open.

Do this: Update to 2.1.309 and re-test Windows hooks that block with exit code 2.

Environment-variable secrets

Hosting platforms store your API keys and passwords as "environment variables" your app reads at start-up, so one platform breach exposes every customer's secrets.

Basic mitigation: Store only short-lived, scoped keys there, fetch long-lived ones from a secrets manager, and cap AI spend.
