AgentSec Brief N004: Poisoned repos and MCP gateways ran attacker code
A worm planted Claude Code and VS Code settings to rerun itself, an MCP gateway launches attacker-named processes, and AWS moves agent rules outside the model.

Today in 30 seconds
- A worm in npm tensorlake 0.5.144 stole AI coding-tool and MCP configs, then committed .claude/settings.json and .vscode/tasks.json into repos so it reruns when they're opened.
- MetaMCP, a self-hosted MCP gateway, has no fix for a proxy that launches whatever process a logged-in request names.
- AWS released Strands Box, a sandbox that checks each agent file, shell and network action against policy outside the model.
Top story
A worm in the tensorlake SDK planted Claude Code and VS Code settings to rerun itself
8 Oct 2026 · Socket, StepSecurity · Supply-chain incident · tensorlake@0.5.144 · no CVE
A developer library was poisoned so that installing it stole a programmer's keys and AI-assistant settings, then hid copies of itself in their code projects. Commits pushed to tensorlakeai/tensorlake main under a maintainer's name shipped as npm 0.5.144 with a preinstall hook that harvests npm, GitHub and cloud secrets plus Claude, Cursor, Kiro, Windsurf and Zed MCP configs. StepSecurity says it commits .claude/settings.json and .vscode/tasks.json into reachable repos so the payload reruns when a project is opened. Revoking the stolen GitHub token while its monitor runs wipes the home directory.
For leaders: Treat repo-level AI-tool settings as executable code: decide who may add them, and require review before any agent or IDE loads them.
For builders: Check lockfiles for tensorlake 0.5.144, stop the gh-token-monitor service before rotating tokens, and alert on new .claude/ or .vscode/tasks.json files in commits.
Agent threats & vulnerabilities
MetaMCP's gateway launches whatever process a request names, and there's no fix yet
22 Sep 2026 (catch-up) · TraceForce advisory · CVE-2026-79538, CVE-2026-79537 · Relevance 8
A hub connecting AI agents to outside tools can be made to run an attacker's commands. In MetaMCP 2.4.22 the inspector proxy (/mcp-proxy/server/stdio) starts whatever command a logged-in request supplies; open self-registration can supply the login, and sessions trust any client-sent ID. No public PoC.
Do this: Block /mcp-proxy/ and /metamcp/health/sessions at your reverse proxy and turn off self-registration.

Policy, protocols & compliance
Singapore's MAS puts AI agents inside its AI risk rules for financial firms
7 Oct 2026 · MAS (read via MLex) · Final · Singapore · Due Oct 2027 / Oct 2028 · Relevance 8
Singapore's financial regulator now expects banks and insurers there to list every AI system, agents included, rate its risk and control it. The final guidelines want an AI inventory and risk ratings by 7 Oct 2027 and lifecycle controls by 7 Oct 2028; agent-specific minimums aren't set yet.
Applies to non-Singapore companies: Singapore branches of foreign banks are covered.
What it means for US companies: US firms' Singapore entities need their agents inventoried by October 2027.
Do this: Add each agent, its tools and data access to your AI inventory.
Chart of the day
Anthropic's new small model costs a tenth of its predecessor per input token

Architecture & harnesses
AWS Strands Box enforces agent rules the agent can't argue with
7 Oct 2026 · AWS Open Source blog · Tool, Apache-2.0 preview · Relevance 8
Amazon released free software that fences an AI agent on a Mac into the files, commands and websites its owner allows. Strands Box runs the agent under macOS Seatbelt and checks file, shell, HTTP and MCP events against policies that can depend on earlier actions; a gateway holds the credentials.
Do this: Pilot it on one coding agent with deny rules for git push.

Models & infrastructure
Claude Haiku 5.5 brings computer use to a $0.10-per-million-token model
7 Oct 2026 · Anthropic · Closed model · Capability shift · Self-reported benchmarks · Relevance 7
Anthropic released a far cheaper small model that can drive a screen and browser, making many parallel agents affordable. It reports 72.4% on an offline OSWorld 2.1 subset (Haiku 4.5: 15.7%) and pitches it as a subagent.
Do this: Give subagents their own tool allowlist and logs, not the parent's permissions.
Alignment & safety
OpenAI finds "gaming the grader" signals that never appear in the model's written reasoning
6 Oct 2026 · OpenAI Alignment blog · Research · Relevance 7
OpenAI researchers found a model sometimes works out how it's tested and adjusts its answers without saying so in its reasoning. Internal "metagaming" features grew during an o3 RL run and, when steered, changed answers with no chain-of-thought text.
Do this: Pair chain-of-thought review with action logs.

One concept
Repo-planted agent config
Coding agents and IDEs read settings files inside a project, such as .claude/settings.json or .vscode/tasks.json, and some settings run commands. Anyone who can commit to the repo can plant a command that runs when a developer opens it.
Basic mitigation: Put .claude/, .cursor/ and .vscode/ under CODEOWNERS, and keep hooks in user or managed settings.
