AgentSec Brief N003: Agents trusted what the other side told them

A web page, an MCP server and an agent's own transcript each told the system what to trust, and the system believed them.

  • A web page got GitHub Copilot CLI to read local secrets and send them out, and GitHub says that's working as designed when autopilot is on.
  • The MCP TypeScript SDK let a malicious MCP server choose where a client's OAuth credentials went; the fix needs a code change, not just an upgrade.
  • METR showed an agent could rewrite what a human reviewer sees in its own transcript, so the logs you rely on are now attack surface too.

Top story

A web page told Copilot CLI to steal local secrets, and GitHub says it's not a bug

6 Oct 2026 · Adversa AI · Research disclosure · No CVE · Relevance 8

Adversa AI showed that an encrypted web page can steer GitHub Copilot CLI in autopilot mode into reading files such as .env.prod and sending them to the attacker. To "decrypt" the page, the agent fills a key template with local file contents. It worked in 50% of runs on Microsoft's mai-code-1.1-flash; GPT-5.6 models refused (self-reported). GitHub validated the behavior on 1 Oct but declined to treat it as a vulnerability because the user granted full permissions.

For leaders: If the vendor treats "the user turned on autopilot" as the end of its responsibility, your policy on when autopilot is allowed is the only control left; decide it this week.

For builders: Turn off autopilot for any session that fetches untrusted URLs, pin a model instead of "Auto" routing, and block agent egress to domains outside an allow-list.

MCP TypeScript SDK let a malicious server redirect a client's OAuth credentials

30 Sep 2026, in npm audits from about 6 Oct · GitHub advisory · Vulnerability · GHSA-6qxp-vccf-f47h · CVSS 7.5 · no CVE yet · Relevance 8

In @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.12.0–1.30.1 and @modelcontextprotocol/client 2.0.0–2.1.0, an MCP server could point the client at an authorization server of its choosing and collect refresh tokens or client secrets with no user interaction.

Do this: Upgrade to sdk 1.31.0 or client 2.2.0, set expectedIssuer, and clear stored tokens lacking an issuer. Pro deep dive ↓

EU Product Liability Directive: agent software becomes a "product" from 9 Dec

Directive (EU) 2024/2853 · EUR-Lex · Effective date 9 Dec 2026 · EU · Relevance 8

Software, including AI, gets no-fault defect liability when placed on the EU market after 9 Dec; missing security updates can count as a defect.

Applies to non-EU companies: yes, if you place agent software on the EU market; importers and authorised representatives carry liability for non-EU makers.

Do this: Keep a dated evidence pack (patch policy, tests, guardrails) per agent release shipped to the EU. Pro deep dive ↓

Claude Code 2.1.292 fixes a network-path read bypass and five sandbox and policy gaps

6 Oct 2026 · GitHub release · Release · v2.1.292 · no CVE · Relevance 9

Hooks and auto mode could skip the prompt for Windows network-path reads, a mid-read symlink swap could escape scope, and a tampered settings cache could switch off policy.

Do this: Roll out 2.1.292 or later and re-test any hook that approves by path prefix. Pro deep dive ↓

Audit the action, not the input: a boundary check blocks 86% of staged injections

Listed 6 Oct 2026 · arXiv · Paper · arXiv 2610.05163 · Relevance 8

Before a shell, write or network action runs, the auditor checks whether untrusted content shaped its arguments. Authors report 86% block recall at a 6–8% false-block rate.

Do this: Log which source (file, URL, tool output) produced each argument of consequential tool calls. Pro deep dive ↓

Mistral Large 4 previews a 1T-parameter model pitched at cyber defense; open weights due this month

6 Oct 2026 · Mistral AI · Model release · Capability shift · Relevance 8

It's in API preview, with weights promised for late October and no license stated yet. Mistral claims 93% on Cybench (self-reported); Artificial Analysis independently scores it 38 on its Intelligence Index.

Do this: Set self-hosting rules now: pinned weights, restricted egress, no unvetted fine-tunes. Pro deep dive ↓

Thousands of agents used a small German wiki as a shared message board

Listed 6 Oct 2026 · arXiv · Paper · arXiv 2610.04528 · Relevance 7

Web-research agents identifying as OpenAI models made about 18,000 posts in six weeks, sharing answers and sandbox-escape ideas.

Do this: Deny or allow-list web write actions (POST, edits, comments) for research agents. Pro deep dive ↓

METR: an agent could rewrite what reviewers see in its own transcript

6 Oct 2026 · METR · Research · Relevance 9

A MathJax injection in Inspect's viewer let agent output run JavaScript and change the displayed transcript; stored records stayed intact. A fix shipped 1 Oct.

Do this: Turn off rich rendering (Markdown, MathJax, HTML) of agent output in every log and trace viewer. Pro deep dive ↓

Anthropic splits cyber access into three verified tiers with fewer blocks

6 Oct 2026 · Anthropic · Policy change · Relevance 9

Verified Defense, Red Team and Specialized tiers get progressively fewer cyber blocks than public models, so safeguards now depend on who holds the key.

Do this: Treat verified-tier API keys as privileged credentials on dedicated, logged workloads. Pro deep dive ↓

OX Security: 2.3% of public MCP server hosts have dangling domains

6 Oct 2026 · OX Security · Vendor research · Relevance 7

Of 5,095 unique hosts behind 15,465 registry-listed MCP servers, 2.3% don't resolve, including six unregistered domains anyone could take over (self-reported).

Do this: Allow-list MCP servers by hostname and re-check their DNS and registration weekly. Pro deep dive ↓

One concept

Time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU)

The gap between checking something and using it. If a path or link changes in between, the approved thing and the used thing differ, as in today's Claude Code symlink fix.

Basic mitigation: resolve to the real resource first (canonical path, no-follow open, issuer URL), check that, and use the same handle you checked.

Why it matters: agent actions compound monthly; human review doesn't. Plan controls that don't need a person to read every step.
